Award in Coaching Studies

(ACS)

Nationally accredited multi-sports coaching qualification, the ACS is an excellent practical qualification for anybody interested in becoming a sports coach.  The Award underpins sports specific coaching qualifications and helps to enhance career prospects in sport. It offers a nationally recognised qualification for individuals who are committed to continuously refining and developing their coaching capabilities.

The ACS programme provides a Nationally Recognized Qualification, links closely with other level 2 and 3 courses offered by sports specific organizations and Governing Bodies and provides a natural stepping stone for individuals who have attended previous coach development workshops.

The ACS Content

Unit 1 – Safety and Ethics in Sports Coaching (QCA Unit No: H/500/3685)

Unit 2 – Support Coaching using Sports Science (QCA Unit No: M/500/3687)

Unit 3 – Plan for Sports Coaching (QCA Unit No: T/500/3688)

Unit 4 – Deliver and Review Sports Coaching (QCA Unit No: A/500/3689)

The Programme

The programme is offered by way of a stream-lined and flexible approach to ensure that candidates are supported to achieve the award.  Workshops are augmented by one-to-one support via telephone and e-mail.

The programme is delivered in the following stages:

Personal Development Plan – completed with each potential candidate and the Course Director on a one-to-one basis.   This is done by way of a professional discussion and is used to identify the suitability of candidates for the programme.  Development needs are identified where applicable and signposting to appropriate National Level 2 or 3 courses may occur if this is felt necessary by the ACS candidate and the Course Director.

Programme Overview Session (3 Hours) – introduction to the programme, approach and assessment methodology.  Key requirements of portfolio-building.  Identification of support interventions and workshops required by the candidates.

Structured support sessions and access to online learning materials – these are provided to enable candidates to portfolio-build with the support of the Course Director and share good practice approaches regarding coaching.  Approximately 5 group sessions lasting 3 hours in duration are normally adequate for experienced coaches.

Good practice is shared amongst the participants by demonstrating how they:

Plan and prepare for coaching sessions

          Conduct safe coaching sessions

          Coach ethically

          Establish and maintain positive relationships

          Develop their communication skills

Can evaluate their own and others’ coaching performance

          Improve how they coach

Can deal with emergencies, injuries and accidents

Promote physical activity positively and encourage participation

Assessment

Candidates must successfully complete an ACS portfolio and be observed successfully delivering planned coaching sessions.

Programme Costs

Typically, the full cost of the programme is charged at £450 per person - inclusive of all materials, resources, assessment and certification, however, group discounts are available.  Contact Programme Director Fiona Rice (07796926590) for details.
